Buying and Cleansing Crystals
It is best if you go to the store and hold your own crystals in your left hand before buying them. The left side of your body lets energy in while the right pushes energy out! So, if you hold crystals in your left hand, you will generally feel if this crystal feels right to you.
The first group of crystals you should get as a beginner would be an amethyst, clear quartz, rose quartz, black tourmaline, citrine, hematite, carnelian and agate. This is a nice mixture of various energies which could help you through any issue.
Next put them in a sunny window for the next three full days (meaning the sun's "masculine" energy in the day and the moon's "feminine" energy through the night). After the UV's clear your crystals, you can put them in your pocket, purse, drawer, up on a window sill, in a room on a table, etc. You can place them anywhere you need that crystal's energetic help. Crystals radiate energy to 6' in all directions. If you buy a round crystal, the energy will be evenly distributed; however, all crystals have a powerful and good effect on humans and animals.
You may also hold your crystals near white sage if it is being burned to get rid of negativity or any entity that may be residing inside of your crystal; however, the sun/moon combination is the only cleansing that energizes your crystals as well.
Remember, crystals are like batteries. They require re-charging from time to time if you feel they are lacking energy. Just pop them back in the window for a full day and night, and your crystal will be good as new.
Just as an aside, crystals can help everyone who displays them. If you keep them in your purse, pocket, drawer or hutch, they will certainly give your energy to those areas and not for you. Take them out some of the time. Use them, hold them and feel the power they can give you.
Crystal therapy is a great modality to help bring in the energies you need and balance the energies that are not favorable.
Feng Shui Quick Tips
Can you believe or teach Feng Shui without all the hocus pocus? Must one be metaphysical or spiritual to believe in this Chinese tradition? The answer is no.
You can just believe that you want to change the energy in your home or office and start putting some of the cures into effect. This can be anything from clearing out your clutter which may include but is not limited to:
Cleaning out the kitchen cabinets
Cleaning out those junk drawers
Clearing out the attic or basement of unwanted items that you no longer need, want or use will push out negative energy from your space and replace it with free-flowing positive energy to bring in positive opportunities.
Organizing your closets - again, get rid of clothes you wish you fit into and treat yourself to new clothes when you finally do lose the weight you want to. A good charity or church would be happy to take your items, especially in this economy.
Place books in the bookcase and CDs/DVDs in their rightful places - what a concept! This is an especially good idea for teens.
Keep each room neat and clean so that you can feel positive energy and receive positive opportunities. Also, if you had to leave at a moment's notice, you would not feel guilty about the state of your home.
Keep bathroom door closed to keep finances in check. Water going down the toilet (men, keep the lid on the toilet closed or you are losing $$) and money does go down the drain. Repair leaks and don't run water unnecessarily.
Put 60 mm round crystals on ceiling fans to keep the energy in your home/office from having your money or health be cut up.
Put 60 mm round crystals in your bathroom, attic, basement, garage and anywhere else you need all the colors of the rainbow and more positive energy. (The trick is that each room should have all the colors of the bagua, so an aurora borealis crystal projects rainbow prisms onto walls, etc., and allows your home to be protected with all of the colors.) Crystals in the attic, basement and garage gives the dark, unused or low energy areas a boost.
No kitchen knives on the kitchen counter (no butcher blocks with knives). Store knives in the cabinet or drawer. This cuts up partnerships, health, wealth, etc.
Do you like all of your kitchen or bathroom towels? If not, you now have new rags so get new towels. You can also ask for these items for birthday or Christmas gifts.
Are you happy with your furniture? Is it too big or too small for your space? The proper size adjusts the energy around you, so be careful in selecting furniture to fit your space.
When was the last time you painted the interior/exterior of your house? Consult a bagua for the appropriate colors to each room in your house; if you can't repaint, use these colors as accent colors by adding new drapes, curtains, afghans, pillows, etc.
Is the front door in good repair? Is the color pleasing? Can people find your front door easily? Red or black are the best colors for a front door to invite good energy and prosperity into your space.
Have your address posted at least three times so people (and opportunities) can find you easily. This also includes the # on the mailbox.
Do you have live plants in your home? Artificial plants have no positive energy and many times looks cheap. There purpose seems to be to collect dust! The only exception is that if the plant looks so real that people have to touch it to be sure that it is artificial or real, then that's acceptable.
Put a deity such as Quan Yin or Buddha or protection symbols such as Temple Fu Dogs or Terracotta Soldiers to protect your front entrance. They should be outside of your door or looking at your front door from inside your home.
Buy bamboo shoots! These can be purchased in many dollar stores so you don't have to spend a lot of money. Get these in 3, 5, 7 or 9 bunch arrangements and keep in the wealth corner (far left position or your space or home) or front entrance.
Partnership area needs items in twos: two flowers, two crystals, two pyramids, two birds, two angels, a picture of a man and a woman. If you want a partnership, do not have individual pictures or items in your partnership area.
Be sure to have two chairs or two end tables in your bedroom if you want to invite in a partner. Notice how many things you have in the partnership area or bedroom that are geared towards one person.
Do you really want a partner? Some people say they do, but after talking to them, they are too busy for a romantic significant other - so be sure you want one before you make the effort.
Keep a bird bath outside of your front door to bring prosperity into your home. Water represents money in Feng Shui.
If you have a large tree blocking the front entrance, it should be cut down; other suggestions are to put chimes, windsocks or a bagua mirror on it to help the energy flow into your home.
Place chimes all around your home inside and out. This breaks up any negative energy which may be in your space or yard.
Keep the proper shapes and/or colors in the appropriate sections of the bagua. It's fundamental, however, you would be surprised at how many people just don't get it!
Fountains are wonderful inside of your home or out. Water brings in prosperity and abundance in all things. The closer to the front door, the better.
Putting swimming pools in your wealth corner (far left side of the yard or in that general area) for continued financial success or new financial opportunities or ventures.
Get rid of STUFF you no longer want, need or like. Clutter makes one depressed, it will and keeps opportunities at bay.

Binge Drinking
Alcohol has been around since ancient times. Its use has been traced back 10,000 years, when it was first consumed for its psychoactive effects. Today, it fuels a billion-dollar industry and is socially accepted almost globally, having become a major part of human recreation and consumption.
While many things about this drug have changed in the last 10,000 years (like flavoring, alcohol content, and most definitely the packaging), some things about it remain the same. It is still a mind-altering substance, can affect the brain both long-term and short-term, and can be addictive. When consumed too often, in copious amounts, and recklessly, it can severely alter a person’s life, and the lives of those around them.
One of the dangerous forms of alcohol use is binge drinking, which is drinking a large amount in a brief period. If a person makes this a habit, this pattern of abuse can eventually result in a serious addiction.
Binge drinking occurs when someone ingests a large quantity of alcohol in a short period of time, and it is also defined by the person’s blood alcohol content. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAA) defines .08 as the amount for this to happen, which translates to 5 standard drinks for men and 4 for women in a 2-hour window.
Just as a person’s gender can impact their intoxication level for biological reasons, so can other variables. Their metabolism, body weight, whether they have eaten in the last few hours, and if any other substances are present in their body can all affect how their body reacts.
The number of a .08 BAC might seem familiar. This is because it also happens to be the level at which you are considered too impaired to drive. In other words, if you reach a .08 BAC, you are considered legally impaired, barring you from legally driving or operating any heavy machinery.
In terms of Alcohol Use Disorder, binge drinking does not explicitly mean a person is dependent on alcohol. It can mean a person drinks uncontrollably to purposefully get drunk, but they might not experience withdrawal symptoms or need to drink throughout the day. Some of these drinkers call themselves “weekend warriors,” meaning they drink hard on the weekends but are able to lay off the booze during the work week. Even if a person is not considered addicted in medical terms, their binge drinking habits often eventually cause physical, psychological and mental health issues if they continue with the behavior.
One of the most common populations associated with binge drinking is college students. There are a number of reasons this occurs, but it originates from the drinking culture that has become ritualized in schools over the years. Its popularity makes it seem obligatory for new students to partake so they will fit in and have the proper college experience.
The pressure to make friends and fit in is a lot to take on for first year college students. They observe the older classes and see that many of them drink when socializing, and it quickly becomes their own normal. There might be bullying or hazing for people to drink a certain amount, and unwilling participants will find themselves drinking so they aren’t left out. Furthermore, as everyone’s body digests alcohol differently as described above, binge drinking in a group can lead to drastic differences in intoxication. It also lowers inhibitions, can lead to incidents of sexual assault, and can hinder academic progress.
In recent years, the prevalence of drinking on college campuses has been in the spotlight due to so many unfortunate events it has caused. Great efforts have been made to change the culture around alcohol use, such as more education, creating safer college campuses, support for victims of assault, and enforcing stricter rules.
Binge drinking can be hard to categorize. Alcohol is so widely used in today’s cultures that it is difficult to pin down if someone’s use is dangerous without knowing a lot of information about their behavior. Someone with heavy drinking habits could place into one of a few categories, such as binge drinking, alcohol abuse, or alcoholism. This is truly up to the drinker themselves and medical professionals to diagnose, but if you are concerned about yourself or a loved one, doing research is perfectly okay.
Binge drinking can include any of the following:
Whatever reason brings a person to drink, whether it’s as a social lubricant, to relax, to help manage anxiety, or to avoid emotions, it is often a way to feel different from your usual self. When it comes to binge drinking, there is sometimes trauma or abuse involved, and binge drinking is a means of escape of self-medicating. Binge drinking can also be the result of peer pressure, like we mentioned happening on college campuses.
If a person continues to binge drink, it can turn into a larger problem. This is not including select times that do not repeat themselves, such as attending a party or wedding and having ‘a few too many.; Most people retract from doing something when it has negative consequences, such as a hangover that normally follows a night of binge drinking. For others, they continue to do it, and a dependence will likely form.
If a person is repeating patterns of binge drinking to extreme amounts, it might result in the following:
If you or a loved one are attempting to cut down on your drinking and immediately experience withdrawal symptoms it is important to seek medical care. Detoxing from alcohol after consistent drinking can be very risky and fatal, so should be done under the care of medical professionals. Granite Recovery Centers provides medical detoxification for people who do not need immediate medical intervention, are not a danger to themselves, and are capable of self-evacuation in the event of an emergency.
If you are still trying to decide if you or a loved one has a binge drinking problem, consider the following:
If you answer ‘yes’ to any of the above questions, it might be time to take a closer look at your drinking habits. Binge drinking, if continued, can lead to an Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and more severe problems that can affect you, your life, and your loved ones.
If you have determined that your drinking is posing a problem in your life but has not yet led to severe consequences, you might consider actively cutting down. This will require self-discipline and dedication, but isn’t impossible if caught early enough.
If you have tried to cut down your alcohol intake and have been unsuccessful, it might be time to consider professional addiction treatment. There are many types of rehab programs that can help you take a firm approach to changing your habits, and they are guided by professionals who will help you work through the process.

Alcohol Consumption During Covid
During times of stress, people often reach for alcohol. A substance long-relied upon for social relief, celebratory occasions, and for pleasure, it is also used as an escape mechanism, or to cope with difficult times, tiring days, or distressing situations. The latter scenarios are played out in all pockets of society—from mothers clamoring for their ‘wine-thirty’ after a long day with their kids, Wall Street financiers hitting the bar after work for whiskey sours, college students partying nonstop after finals week, to union workers gathering at a pub for beers after their shift is done. This socially accepted, popular way to unwind releases inhibitions and temporarily abates worry and anxiety from the day, week, month, or year. In cases of extreme use, these drinking patterns increase and evolve in severity, and problems begin to crop up. This is recognized as Alcohol Use Disorder, which wreaks havoc in the drinker’s life and for everyone around them.
So, naturally, in a year like 2020, faced with the blistering reality of the COVID-19 global pandemic, people are reaching for the bottle more often than not. There is considerable fear of the unknowns surrounding the virus, and it is a time unlike anything we have ever experienced. We don’t know when or if things will ever return to normal.
In order to better understand the dangers posed from indulging in a ‘quarantini,’ or recognizing trouble curtailing alcohol intake, we broke down why people are drinking so much right now, why it could lead to consequences, and what you can do if you or a loved one can’t stop.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Americans have been consuming 14% more alcohol than normal, a statistic reported by the journal JAMA Network Open. Nielsen reports a 54% increase in national sales of alcohol in March 2020, and a 262% increase in online sales from 2019. While this is not altogether shocking when considering other times in history that alcohol consumption has increased (after September 11th, during large storms or bouts of inclement weather like hurricanes), this is particularly troubling because of the unique risk heightened by the pandemic. If someone becomes increasingly reliant on alcohol during this time, not only could it progress into a potentially life-threatening addiction, but it could also put them at greater risk of contracting or spreading the virus.
Why exactly are people drinking so much at this time? Surprisingly, it isn’t all related to the anxiety of catching the disease, though that is a major catalyst. Other major worries include:
For all of these reasons, people might be eager for a way to take a mental break to step away from the situation they’re faced with. The monotony of each day being seemingly the same as the country struggles to find the vaccine and keep the economy alive can feel stifling and inescapable otherwise. Absence of other supports, such as therapy or peer support in a workplace environment, can also be a heavy loss for this time when we are all stressed about the pandemic.
Drinking is known to have negative effects on our mental and physical health if done in excess. Binge drinking can be especially dangerous and can lead to a slew of problems, including:
If someone is drinking to excess, their immune system will be compromised. They run a higher risk of respiratory infections. This might make them less able to fend off COVID-19 if they are to contract it. The virus attacks the respiratory system, and can be deadly. Therefore if a person’s health—in particular, their respiratory system—is weakened by their drinking habits, they will be at greater risk of fending it off.
Alcohol is also largely socially accepted in America, and therefore it is not seen as risky compared to drugs. You could even think that drinking at home would pose less chance of overindulging. In reality, if a person drinks at a bar or restaurant, they are more apt to limit their intake in order to drive home afterward. If they are at home, they don’t have to adhere to the legal limit. They are also their own bartender, and can pour heavier drinks than usual, or finish off a bottle of wine without fear of judgment. They also might be drinking in front of a television or computer and lose track of their intake, leading to more drinks.
Without the environmental constructs of a social establishment such as a bar, restaurant, or even with peers at a party or event, there is less accountability in place.
If you or a loved one are stuck at home right now and you are worried about alcohol intake, it’s important to evaluate the situation the best you can. Some red flags to look out for include:
While it can be hard to separate the anxiety and depression brought on from the pandemic blues and what symptoms of alcoholism might be, it isn’t impossible.
If you think there might be a problem, some ways you can cope with stress instead of drinking include:
Staying motivated and busy is very important, as is utilizing available supports. Reach out to old friends or family members to chat instead of making yourself a drink after the workday, and be sure to go outside for walks as often as possible. Maintaining an exercise routine and healthy diet will keep your body feeling strong and healthy, as will a regulated sleep schedule. It is also a good idea to keep alcohol out of the house if it is becoming a problem.
If you or a loved one is experiencing problems with drinking, help is available. While everyone is coping with the current normal in their own way, it isn’t necessary to do so alone. Our Admissions Specialists are available 24/7 and would be happy to answer any questions to help you get the support you need. Please give us a call today.
